Italian Red Sauce is a tribute to owner Al Ceperano's family and to his grandmother's Little Italy restaurant where he worked as a kid. This eatery, located in the strip-mall mecca of Sunrise, isn't exactly like strolling around the streets of lower Manhattan, but with Aldo Vespero in the kitchen, it satisfies the hunger for real Italian-American eats that strike so many New Yorkers living in South Florida. Family is so important to Ceperano, in fact, that all of the dishes here are offered for in sharing-sized portions as well as individual sizes. Obviously shared plates, like veal parmigiana or a luscious gnocchi with braised short rib, are more expensive, but they also recreate the classic Italian Sunday night dinner. This is a place for large groups of friends and family to gather, to talk, and to dig into Italian classics covered in the bright, deeply flavored sauce – which so many Italians call “gravy” – that gives this restaurant its name.
