Description

The longest views in Hollywood come courtesy of the ocean-facing tables at Hasan Kochan's 17-year-old Turkish restaurant on the Hollywood Broadwalk. Kochan's food is homemade and moderately priced ($3.95 to $9.95 for small plates, up to $17.95 for entrées) - from ubiquitous Mideast staples like spinach pie and baba gannouj to more outré fare: feta and parsley stuffed cigars, little Turkish pizzas topped with lamb and vegetables, tripe soup, red kidney bean stew, a dish of fried sardines, a plate of pan-tossed liver cubes. A side of thick cacik, yogurt, and cucumber salad is as mild as an ocean breeze. Finish with a cup of Turkish coffee and an oh-so-sweet slab of baklava.

These days folks are stuffing all kinds of things inside the familiar pita. But tofu and alfalfa sprouts are not what Middle Eastern bakers had in mind when they invented the flat, round pocket bread. Luckily, small places abound where you can fin... More »
