Description

Issian is a friendly, well-lit, offbeat izakaya--a place where you drink big bottles of Asahi in order to eat salty snacks like squid with kimchi, potato croquettes, sushi (meh), and fried smelt. The restaurant advertises its stone grill, a slab of hot rock that skewered meats are cooked directly on; the hype seems unjustified until you taste the way it caramelizes and crisps up slices of fresh pork belly.

Izakaya's are not sushi bars...they are bar food places. Fried chicken 'karaage", Issian Salad "the everything salad", skewars of asparagus wrapped with bacon(dripping), salmon collar servings the size of my head, skewars of fried pork are why I go there. Not a grain of rice or raw fish on my plate. Sake served in the traditional manner...overflowing the carafe, and generally good beer. If I am lucky, the glee club that shows up for dinner will sing for us.
