This coffee shop is house next to Art League Houston in a building that, several years ago, was a giant, trippy art project. The Art Guys dismantled the wall facing the street and created a wooden vortex that led toward the back of the building, attracting all sorts of media attention and photo-takers. Now a shiny new building stands in its place, and on the coffee shop side, it's all about brewed drinks, pastries and a sleek, reasonably quiet place to study or hang out, right off Montrose. Prices are a bit steeper than Starbucks, but that's forgivable for an independent place. Free wi-fi is available -- the password is listed on your receipt.

This coffeehouse is attracting as much attention as its namesake. Inspired by Inversion, the giant-vortex house that once stood at 1956 Montrose, Inversion Coffee House has just as many Houstonians stopping by for its art as for its killer cup of joe. Inversion has all the pleasantries of Starbucks (i.e., quality coffee served by a staff that doesn't think they're above taking your order) as well as its own flair. It shares space with Art League Houston, and owner Michael Terrazas welcomes... More »
