Description

If regulars could keep this place a secret, they would. Dining at I Fratellini, the second venture of Zoë Robinson (of the eponymous Zoë Pan-Asian Café in the CWE) and her executive chef Ny Vongsaly, is one of the St. Louis dining scene's singular pleasures. A meal can begin with warm baguettes and pistachio-studded butter and segue into a arugula salad with toasted pine nuts. Then comes the entrée -- snapper with kalamata olives, perhaps, or beef medallions -- and then, of course, dessert (fresh offerings from La Dolce Via). Everything here, from the Modernist light fixtures to the tabletop roses to the gracious service, is just right.

  • 2005 | Best Italian Restaurant (Not Cheap)

If the regulars at I Fratellini could keep the place to themselves, they would. Perhaps they'd even employ a little subterfuge: "What? What Italian restaurant? That's, um, a tarantula store. Look out!" And we could hardly fault the devotees for their deception: The beautiful, postage stamp-size restaurant seats only 35, and the rustic Italian cuisine is so extraordinary that by the second mouthful you'll be planning a return visit. A meal at I Fratellini, the second restaurant venture of Zo... More »

  • 2004 | Best Takeout Counter (Gourmet Division)

It seems a crime not to take your lunch at I Fratellini, considering the Clayton storefront restaurant comprises one of the city's nicest dining rooms. But alas, life is tough, and sometimes lunch must be gobbled in bland conference rooms, while tallying last month's revenue sheets or while ferrying from one job to the next. That's no reason to suffer through soggy sandwiches or McSalads. With a little foresight, you can order out from the homey Italian eatery. I Fratellini offers its entire... More »

  • 2002 | Best Sommelier

"I've always looked for the different, the out-of-the-way, never the easy, sure thing," explains Rich Zellich when we ask him how he came to be the sommelier at I Fratellini. St. Louis has many wine enthusiasts, but except for the francophiles, few are smitten with the wine of a single country. Zellich is so rapturous about Italian wine that he reads about Italy's viticulture for several hours a day, leads a tasting group, takes Italian-language lessons and plans a sweep next year through... • 2002 | Best Minimalist Chandelier

When you think "chandelier," the first mind-image is probably of a fancy one made of cut crystal. But sometimes, of course, the simpler the better. Check out the lights designed by artists, such as the beauties dangling above tables at SqWires, Lafayette Square's newest hangout, housed in an old wire company. No one, though, beats the chandeliers at I Fratellini, Zoë Robinson's restaurant on the outskirts of downtown Clayton. Imagine 50 strands of light cords, each ending in a bare bulb... More »
