Houston Press' Description
Provisions is the casual half of The Pass & Provisions, serving lunch and dinner six days a week in a Midtown/Montrose setting that's equally accommodating of jeans and cocktail dresses. Dishes are wildly inventive here, and you may not end up with what you expected, so come with an open mind. Pizzas and pastas are the most popular items, with the mozzarella, tomato and basil pizza a favorite (and one of the only straightforward things on the menu). Pastas come in two sizes — small and large — but you can split the small with two people. Save room for the desserts, which often feature enjoyable adolescent touches like Dippin' Dots or Magic Shell atop creatively flavored ice creams.
This restaurant will probably not survive. The concept and location are good. Menu is a bit pretentious and generally price-y - although there are some $$ items which have value within the context of the entire menu. This restaurant will probably not survive. The concept and location are good. Menu is a bit pretentious and generally price-y - although there are some $$ items which have value within the context of the entire menu. However, six-oz portion of bass in a bowl of soup for $25 is not the best value on the menu. Get a pizza. One big problem is that the staff are so different in their concepts of good service. Our waitress spoke to the table beside us for ten minutes - a very meaningless discussion - before even giving us water and asking if we wanted drinks or wine. After taking our order, she morphed into being a bartender, and a much better waitress took command, but only after my small water glass was twice empty and need of attention. Valet parking is entirely uncalled for. Work on service issues, and more people may return to keep you alive.
Tips from foursquare
Provisions serves creative twists on classic pizza and pastas; dinner at The Pass is more like attending a theatrical performance than eating a meal with each dish a scene.
As in the kitchen, the bar at Provisions features talented people turned loose to create. It's become so popular that it recently extended its hours to 2:00 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
The bar staff is a cast of stars. Skipping libations here is not an option unless you’re on a budget or in recovery.
These folks... The'll take good care of you. Try it all. Because it's all GOOD.
Get a reservation at the chef's counter. It's the best seat in the house and the chef is so helpful and personable. Also, try the lamb ribs...they're are amazing!
