Houston Press' Description

Housed in the oldest commercial building in town, La Carafe exudes history. The jukebox plays no small part in this process, stocked as it is with Benny Goodman and Lady Day, and so do the candles behind the bar resting atop mountains of their own melted wax. The brick walls are covered with photos and paintings of the city in bygone days and even one of the city's namesake. The museum-worthy collection is dominated by a huge portrait of Sam Houston himself. A weekend afternoon here taking in the downtown scenes will really make you fall in love with Houston all over again.

This is a great spot. One of the oldest bars in Houston I believe, and supposedly haunted. I attended a seance there. Great atmosphere.

This is a great place to go for a quiet night. It can get crowded on weekends, but it's so small that it doesn't really get loud. They also have the best jukebox in town, with everything from Bob Wills to Marlene Dietrich, Hank Williams to Charles Mingus, and even a few rock albums in there. It's my favorite place in town for these reasons. Cash only, but they have an ATM.

Make a practice of carrying cash if you want to make this haunted, dusty escape your spot. They don't accept plastic of any kind.

Oldest operating building in Houston (http://bit.ly/a31m89). Stare at the bar carvings, put a couple bucks in the jukebox and check out the upstairs balcony (weekends only). Oh, and bring cash.
