Houston Press' Description

This is your father's Tex-Mex, in the best possible way. El Real Tex-Mex Cafe is a satisfying return to form for a worthy genre: old-school Tex-Mex, in the style of Felix and other dearly departed restaurants from years past. It's a star-studded collaboration between the original Tex-Mex apologist (and former Houston Press food critic) Robb Walsh and celebrity chef Bryan Caswell, so the food could easily be over-hyped and under-delivering. But it isn't. Get a plate of chili con carne-smothered cheese enchiladas and you'll wonder where they've been all your life. Ditto the San Antonio-inspired puffy tacos with mesquite-smoked chicken and the refried beans made with pure, rendered lard. Yes, lard.

Tips from foursquare

  • CultureMap Houston on 02/28/12

The Tex-Mex here is perfect as a post-midnight meal, and the owners know it — El Real is open to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

  • AskMen on 03/11/11

The menu isn't final, nor the room, but if you keep a close eye on the Twitter feed, you'll notice a few hints - such as The Tampiqueña Plate was originally served at the Tampico Club in Mexico City.

  • Almost Veggies on 10/14/11

Milk Shake “No Minors” combines Brandy & Kahlua with ice cream in the very best way. Do yourself a favor: Skip the margarita and order this shake, for it is grand.

  • Houston Press on 08/27/13

Try the Fajita Taco Salad! El Real gets extra points for using fajita beef and offering fragrant dressings such as jalapeño lime and cilantro ranch.
