Want a great East Coast-style bagel on the West Coast, but you're tired of hearing "Fuggedaboutit"? Well, House of Bagels has been baking Brooklyn-style bagels from scratch every morning since 1962. Try one of its signature schmears like lox and onion, sun-dried tomato with basil, or strawberry. And if you're not in the mood for circular bread, there's a whole New York deli menu featuring reubens, chopped liver, and pastrami sandwiches. We recommend trying them on the house-baked rye or challah breads. House of Bagels is definitely good for a nosh.

Too many so-called bagels sold in San Francisco are more like savory doughnuts: squishy, soft, altogether anemic. But the real chewy N.Y.-style boiled-water bagels are still in fashion at House of Bagels, an unimpressive-looking deli that offers an impressive lineup of food in addition to its baked goods. The bagels are available in many flavors: plain, poppyseed, sesame, onion, cinnamon-raisin, everything, whole-wheat (seeded or plain), corn, garlic, blueberry, salt, rye, pumpernickel, jalape�o, egg, and asiago. House of Bagels also offers addictive rolls in two shapes known as onion flats or onion loaves, as well as a classic onion-nested bialy. It also makes its own flavored cream cheeses: green onion, veggie, garlic and herb, lox and green onion, sun-dried tomato and basil, strawberry, and honey.
