Opening next door to a well-known French bakery could spell disaster for a bagel shop. But House of Bagels & Bialys in Palmetto Bay has no fear. It sells more than 13 kinds of bagels and bialys. (For the uninitiated, a bialys is similar to a bagel but solely baked, not boiled and then baked. It also features a depression in the middle that's filled with different ingredients.) Then there are classic Jewish staples such as corned beef ($7.50), hot pastrami ($7.50), Reuben ($8.95), and chopped liver ($5.95) sandwiches, which can be served on a bagel, roll, or rye or wheat bread. Those looking for a fresh bagel for breakfast can have it with a selection of egg dishes, including omelets featuring pastrami, corned beef, turkey, or salami ($5.75). The shop also offers authentic salads featuring white fish, chopped liver, or egg ($7.95). Typically, there is a variety of quiches and knishes for sale, as well as old-world pastries. Seating is sparse - a handful of tables outside and a counter with about ten stools inside. It's a friendly place that gets a little harried during the morning and afternoon rush.
