Sleek, sexy, and sophisticated often get tossed around when describing the atmosphere of the Lower East Side's Hotel on Rivington. Though the mod-chic veneer is starting to wear a little thin in some parts of the space, there's never a dull moment when--and if--you can make it upstairs to the penthouse lounge. Beyond having to traverse elevators and stairways to get to, the lounge here has a notoriously finicky door policy. Some nights, the bouncers may seem overly zealous. Others, you might wonder if they are paying attention at all. Unless the lounge is booked out for private events, DJs here spin a vague mix of danceable tracks and what’s trending. Some have said they’ve gotten bad treatment, and the drinks, as always in a place of this caliber, are what many call overpriced. But that's expected in a joint like this, and almost all is forgiven when you enjoy the view. The penthouse sits on one of the neighborhood's tallest buildings. Another one of my favorite hotels to stay at in NYC. It's right in the middle of the LES (Lower East Side). Never in my years of living in the East Village thru the 80's and 90's did I think that part of town would have blown up. Although gentrified, it still is super cool down there. This hotel is right in the middle of it all. If you're feeling super large, you can rent out the penthouse that is an amazing duplex loft. VERY PRICEY though. What I did was rent the owners apartment which he rents out often. It's a two bedroom room that has the most amazing views and one of the rooms has bunk beds (for his kids), so I suggest even getting this place with as many as four people. Then dollar for dollar, it's really worth it.
some of the coolest designed rooms i have ever seen
I try to stay here every time I'm in New York. I love the location on the Lower East Side, there's shopping and restaurants everywhere, and the rooms are floor-to-ceiling glass so the views are pretty amazing. You're looking at the Financial District out of your bedroom window and the Empire State Building out another. Good times.
You and your partner are shopping at Babeland for some new love trinkets and can't wait to get home to try them out. Hey, we've all been there. Luckily, the Hotel on Rivington is just a block away. What's that? Don't have $500 to spare for a room? Relax--just have a drink at the ground-floor bar. Politely excuse yourself to use the restroom. Go through the black-metal tunnel, downstairs, into the gothic hall of doors. Enter the one on your far right--your personal six-by-four-foot ch... More »
