Too few Seattleites have eaten Hot Mama's when sober enough to give the Pine Street corner store its due. If there's any pizzeria in town that delivers the pizza by the slice, it's Hot Mama's, where the thin-crust pies are only at the best when they're reheated (something about the double-cooking gives the floury crusts an extra snap). They're so good that no one minds the grease that drips onto their plates, covering the paper with orange dots. The late-night eavesdropping is priceless.

You know a pizza parlor specializes in feeding drunken masses when it switches from plastic to paper plates daily at 5 p.m. Hot Mama's Pizza has served up New York�style slices to inebriated Seattleites since opening across the street from Linda's Tavern in 1995. The tiny hole in the wall only seats 10 or so, but that doesn't deter patrons from coming in and enjoying some greasy goodness on foot. I've stumbled out of a bar on numerous occasions and headed, out of survival instinct, toward Hot Mama's to soak up the excess alcohol in my bloodstream. The efficient folks behind the counter do an impressive job dealing with the 2 a.m. rush, and are well-versed in drunk speak. "Meat," someone will bellow like a Neanderthal, and lo and behold a slice of pepperoni gets slid their way. (My vote goes to the pesto.) After a hard night of drinking, Mama is there to take care of us all like we're her own. And for that, I love her.�Erika Hobart
