Description

This more than 30-year-old hot dog stand in Fort Lauderdale offers some of the most satiating Chicago-style dogs and sausages in the land. Owned by former Chicagoan Barry Star, Hot Dog Heaven serves a classic Windy City-style dog on a poppy bun, topped with mustard, neon relish, onions, pickles, hot peppers, tomatoes, and a dash of celery salt. Order one with a giant pickle, uncut if you dare.

Italian Sausages or Hot Dogs? Which Ones and Where to Go

When given the choice between Italian sausage or hot dogs, in my past it had been no brainer. Despite that they're both made with animal innards, pork and pork fat is more of a delight than beef parts... More »

  • 2012 | Best Hot Dog

Say it with me now: Vienna beef hot dog on a bun, yellow mustard, onions, tomatoes, bright-green relish, pickle spear, sport peppers, and a dusting of celery salt. And absolutely no friggin' ketchup. This is a mantra known dearly to every Chicagoan, and it should be yours too: There's no better way to eat your tube meat than with this eclectic garden of condiments. Of course, if you're feeling heretical, get the truly fine folks in Heaven to slather your dog with chili and cheese or even... More »

  • 2008 | Personal Best

On June 19, 2008, Barry Star will celebrate his 30th year in business as owner of Hot Dog Heaven, the iconic Fort Lauderdale sandwich stand on Sunrise Boulevard. A Chicago native, Star speaks passionately about his food of choice. He'll tell you about the hot dog's humble days as a Depression-era snack or why neon relish producers switched over to vegetable dye instead of the chemical stuff (Chicago's waterways were turning an unnatural, albeit delicious color). It's Star's obsession with... More »

  • 2006 | Best French Fries

The world is aflutter with waffle fries, crinkle-cut fries, sweet potato fries, and parmesan truffle fries. But sometimes a fry is just a fry... and it's all you need. At Hot Dog Heaven, you get your straight-cut fries placed lovingly on a sheet of tissue paper in an old-fashioned red-and-white checkered cardboard basket. It's comforting to know that, if you want, the attentive staff will ladle on a hefty spoonful of cheese and/or chili. The only downfall: You might have to wait in line for... More »

  • 1999 | Best Hot Dogs

Among the worst hot dogs in the world are the shriveled pinkish-brown sausages sold two for a dollar along with tropical fruit drinks at a New York institution known the world over because of a Seinfeld cameo. The encased mystery meat available all night at Gray's Papaya is fossil fuel for many of the city's homeless as well as more than a few early-morning club crawlers. On the other end of the great American hot dog spectrum is Fort Lauderdale's own Hot Dog Heaven. The tiny sausage shrine... More »
