Fall, to the cynical Seattleite, is a mash-up of dying leaves, dreary rain, and rapidly darkening days. The only thing worth getting out of bed for is the arrival of pumpkin muffins in coffee shops and bakeries across the city. Why the delicacy has become an exclusively fall thing I've never understood. It's not as though the baristas at Starbucks are boiling fresh pumpkins out back; they're made with canned pumpkin. So why not have them every month? Well, one bakery doesn't see why you can't enjoy the spicy sweetness of our favorite breakfast squash year round. And it just so happens that the Pumpkin Muffins at Bothell's Honey Bear Bakery are also the best in the city. Perhaps the 12-month commitment is how Honey Bear has perfected their recipe: a hint of crunch on the outside, a soft cakey inside, and a liberal sprinkle of roasted walnuts. But get there early. "They usually sell out by noon," says a Honey Bear staffer.
