Description

It's been two decades since Hollywood Alley swung open its doors to the public, and since those late-80s days, the iconic club's stage has hosted sessions by some of the biggest names in the Valley's recent rock history. From gigs by punk legends the Sun City Girls back in the day, to the bands of the early-90s Mill Avenue scene like the Gin Blossoms, up to such modern-day scenesters as the Glass Heroes. The music may have changed over the years, but the decor definitely hasn't (countless classic movie posters and countless band stickers still cover the walls).

  • 2009 | Best Rock Club

When Hollywood Alley debuted in 1988, bands didn't exactly beat a path to its door.Back in those days, the epicenter of the local music scene was undoubtedly Mill Avenue and such venues as Long Wong's and Chuy's, and not some pissant bar and grill off the beaten path in Mesa. In fact, owner Ross Wincek didn't start booking bands until months after he opened.More than 20 years later, it's hard imagining a Valley without Hollywood Alley, as it's become a mainstay of the music scene while... • 2008 | Best New Art Shindig

There are scene bars, restaurants, and music clubs. Imagine if all three, ahem, scenes could unite into one super-fun scenester extravaganza. Well, thanks to Henri Benard from psychedelic jam band Rocketline, there's one place that folks can hang. Held on the Third Friday of each month, the Theonix Arts Showcase ("Theonix" coming from an amalgamation of Tempe and Phoenix) features artists assaulting live canvasses, local bands such as Princess LadyFriend and Brewed to Perfection rocking out,... • 2007 | BEST DESIGNER DRINK

Veteran Valley bartender and mini-music-mogul Vil Vodka is known for his potent custom shots, usually created for the purpose of promoting or paying homage to local bands. Vodka's "Robitussin" shot, introduced in 2004, smells and tastes like its cough syrup namesake, but taking one shot is probably the equivalent of downing two bottles of the real stuff. Vodka's latest concoction, the "Orange Sunshine" shot -- which he calls "a ghetto variant of the vodka bomber commonly known as Tic-Tac... More »

  • 2007 | BEST PLACE FOR A SECOND CHANCE

It's 8 a.m. on a Saturday. You're coming off a night of multiple nightclubs, sweaty dancing, drinks galore, and after-parties lasting 'til well after sunrise. You feel like hell and you look it, too. The belly of booze is gone, the hangover is starting to kick in and, man, you are starving! Not to mention, you're feeling pretty hard-up because you didn't get lucky. So where can you go The thought of hitting a family breakfast place makes you feel like the uninvited creepy uncle, so you need... More »

  • 2005 | BEST HIP-HOP NIGHT

Wanna see giants walk the Earth Then check out the Blunt Club on Thursday nights at Mesa's Hollywood Alley, where you'll catch live spoken word, painting and performance by legends in the Valley hip-hop scene. Like that "verbal taxidermist" and last year's New Times Best Of cover model, MC Emerg McVay of Bionic Jive fame. Or urban artist extraordinaire Adam Dumper, a.k.a. Dumperfoo, who slings the paint like no man alive save for PBS' Bob Ross, if you count him among the living. Blunt's... More »

  • 2005 | BEST MUSIC ON A SCHOOL NIGHT

Without a doubt, Hollywood Alley has consistently good live music, from hardcore to Americana, on any night of the week. But the past several months have brought a lot more workweek excitement to break up the daily grind. First, Dumperfoo and Emerg McVay's Thursday night Blunt Club arrived. And just this past July, Vodka Tonic Media got on board with its own ongoing Tuesday night party, Gimme Danger, with indie bands and DJs to please the underground rock crowd. It's nice to see an old... More »

  • 2002 | Best Open Mike

We all want to be rock stars, even if we frighten children when we sing in the shower, can't play an instrument, and have the stage presence of a banana slug. At Hollywood Alley's Sunday night open mike, you get your best shot to feel like a real live rock star, if only for three songs. Facilitator "Optimist" puts together a great slate of folks of all levels of talent. From a talent-free "wanna-be" to the occasional, fabulous "could-be," the evening is entertaining regardless. If you don't... More »
