It's a permanent tailgate at Hollingshead's, and not just because of the Green Bay Packers garb for sale hanging from the ceiling or the pickled eggs and pickles kept in chilled brine. The limited menu is stubbornly heartland: deviled eggs, boldly pungent macaroni salads and the sweetest baked beans this side of the Lambeau Field parking lot.
"Thank you so much—have a great day, kids!" Kenny Hollingshead yells from across the counter of his inheritance, Hollingshead's Delicatessen in Orange, as some regular customers leave. He has charmed generations of customers at his family's... More »
The cult surrounding Pliny the Younger from the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa is well-known in the beer world, and it's the kind of cult that'll have people waiting six hours just for a ... More »
Ever heard the joke about how drinking Coors Light is like having sex in a canoe? Because both are fucking close to water? It's an old, tired joke, sure, but back when Santa Ana's Mayor-for-Life Miguel Pulido was a wide-eyed innocent, 3.2 percent... More »
García figured life in Santa Ana—where she grew up during the 1980s—would’ve gotten better for teenagers when she returned in 2008. She had just released her first novel, Las Niñas, a memoir of growing up in one of the most Latino cities in the... More »

Fork over the green to pay for the full-to-bursting sandwiches stuffed with fresh meat and cheese, and you will be chatted up by gregarious proprietor Ken Jr. (who runs the show with his family), a friendly, fanatical Green Bay Packer devotee with a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of beer. We heartily recommend the food--the dill pickle and turkey is proof there is a God, and the deviled eggs are a paprika-drenched slice of pure heaven--and the beer selection, which has something... Yeah, we named it Best Deli in this issue as well, but as the Police song goes, two hearts beat as one--wait, that was U2, and that's a horrible joke. But, really, there's no excuse needed for the double dipping. Hollingshead's was stocking rare craft brews for OC long before it became a trend, and it's still at it, with an amazing array of canned beer, beer on tap and bottles that belies its comfy environs. And this blurb is also a way to honor the memory of Ken Hollingshead Sr., the... More »
Nominally, Hollingshead's is a sandwich shop, but a stroll toward its windows, with their glut of exotic logos, makes its true purpose clear: to sell lots of beer. While it's not a bar--they're only open Monday through Friday and close no later than 9 p.m.--the place sells hundreds of varieties of bottled beers from different parts of the world, a veritable United Nations of fermented starches. Hollingshead's always has more than a dozen microbrews on tap. Gotta... More »
