A St. Louis institution so popular you have to line up on a ramp, amusement-park-style, while you wait for a table. Fried chicken is the main attraction here - more than a few claim it's the city's best. For $7.35 you get a half-chicken fried to a crisp, golden brown, the surface uniformly crunchy, the meat tender. Hodak's also features fried fish, chicken-fried steak and even fried frog legs. Those seeking a non-fried meal will find steaks and barbecue as well as sandwiches, burgers and daily lunch specials.
Our entire staff at Hodak's Restaurant would like to thank St. Louis for voting us St. Louis' #1 Favorite Fried Chicken 23 years in a row, #1 Fries...
St. Louis' neighborhoods are gems in their own right: full of history, great people and, as far as Gut Check is concerned, fantastic food. Each week we'll take you into a specific neighborhood and poi... More »
OK, so our attempt to identify the most underrated restaurant for "sealing the deal" was a dud. No matter. We pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and move on to a matter of more universal importance... More »
OK, but over rated on their chicken.
My man's Favorite, Great Chicken
The line can wrap all the way around the building for fried chicken here, so I'd recommend going during off hours or preparing for a wait!
Here's what transpires every day at Hodak's: A server brings a customer a steaming plate. It is heaped with four pieces of juicy fried chicken, with crinkly French fries and cole slaw on the side. The customer stuffs his pie hole, then is required to pay $7.35 (!) plus tax. Transaction complete. In our age of fad diets and pricey seaweed smoothies, Hodak's is both cheap and refreshingly unapologetic about its belt-defying menu: deep-fried appetizers, robust steaks, seafood, ribs, sammies.... Just so you know, there are about eleventy billion other things you can order at Hodak's besides fried chicken: an eight-ounce charbroiled rib-eye, frog's legs, fried oysters, a rib sandwich, a quarter-pound frankfurter, a turkey club. But notice how none of those other menu items have found their way onto these pages. No offense, other forms of protein proffered at Hodak's, but we show up for one reason only: the best damn fried chicken this side of Kentucky. Crisp and juicy, lightly... More »
When you're famished and have less than $10 in your pocket, Hodak's is the place to head. For $6.40 you get a fried half-a-chicken that's the next best thing to Mom's (and maybe better, depending on the mom). Portions are nothing short of huge. The coleslaw and crinkle-cut fries that accompany each order are enough to satisfy most appetites, but save room for the half-bird -- piping hot, it weighs well over a pound and will take several minutes to cool. Once at eatable temperature, savor the... More »
With the most expensive item on the menu, a steak dinner, costing $8.45, Hodak's is the place to go if you're hungry and near-broke. It's cheaper than most fast-food joints, plus they sell beer. And the service is excellent. You never have to wait more than a few minutes for your order to arrive. A cheeseburger and fries cost $3. For a shade over $8, you can get frog legs. But Hodak's is best known for its fried chicken, which will set you back $5.10 for a half-chicken dinner that includes... More »
