First-time visitors to Kim Hung mall are invariably drawn to the esoteric delights of its eponymous Asian supermarket, but the savvy habitué often stops for a quick bite at this unassuming food counter nearby. Vegetarians can't go wrong with the banh mi dau hu -- moist tofu, slivers of pickled carrot, cucumber and cilantro with mayonnaise on a mini-baguette. The low price is even more astounding than the flavor. Many other sandwiches and plate lunches for all tastes -- impressive for both their substance and their modest cost -- also are available.
In the middle of the "food court" of the Kim Hung Mall is a Vietnamese sandwich shop that sells superdelicious sandwiches for $1.75. Sure, you can find a limp little burger at your local chain for 99 cents, but it won't have near the quality this sandwich does.
