  • 2009 | Best Cultural Festival

Nothing says spring like a couple of nikku-filled onigiri and a little taiko. Can't understand us Don't turn on the subtitles, just head to Matsuri for a couple of meat-filled rice balls and a little Japanese drumming. This downtown Phoenix festival celebrates other aspects of Japan, like the humble bento (lunch box) and karaoke (singing like a drunken cow in public). There are also regular tea ceremonies and plenty of Nippon swag to snatch, from kimonos to manga comic books. So cast aside... More »

  • 2009 | Best Big Show

Tucson's Calexico, a Western- and Latin-tinged rock act that's arguably the biggest indie band in the state, plays Phoenix only every few years. When they do, though, they go all out, as evidenced by their April concert at Heritage Square. The show was promoted by Stateside Presents and Chris Bianco, proprietor of the famous pizzeria next to the wooden structure that sheltered the crowd. Everything from the candle-lit merch tables to the high-end beer to the gorgeous custom tapestry behind... More »

  • 2008 | Best Place to See a Hindu Wedding

Bet you've never gone to a Hindu wedding, let alone even been invited to one since Phoenix seems light years away from India. But you'll get a chance to witness almost the real thing at the annual Diwali Festival of Lights, put on by the India Association of Phoenix and its sister organizations, which are too numerous to list here.Last year, the festival celebrating Diwali, a major fall holiday in India and Nepal, celebrated its sixth anniversary, and it seems to get bigger, grander, and... Beautiful old (only by Phoenix terms) historic neighborhood. Unfortunately you can sometimes catch it when nearly everything is closed. If you have a choice, go during the daytime in the cooler months. There's the Rosson House museum, Doll & Toy Museum, Science Center, History Museum, Pizzeria Bianco, Rose & Crown, and Nobuo.
