Scotland might not be the first place you think of when you think about great cuisine, but worry not; this West Village gastropub isn't just about haggis. The dishes here reflect a more subtle, contemporary view of Scotland: Shepherd's pie packed with wild mushrooms and sautéed kale, salmon flown in from the Scottish coast, a bowl of mussels seasoned with curry and coriander. The space itself looks too precious to technically be called a pub. It's more of a cute little restaurant with homey touches like plaid upholstery, a small bookshelf featuring works by Scottish authors and fanciful wallpaper covered with chubby grouse. It is like a pub in that it has a serious selection of alcohol, including Scotches of all different ages and distilleries and ales from both Scotland and New York. The cocktails almost all utilize Scotch, mixing it with everything from ginger and brown sugar to star anise and egg whites.—Keith Wagstaff
