Description

Not sure if there's a restaurant in OC that serves it, but the best wine since the days of Dionysus is Commandaria St. John, an elixir from Cyprus that's reputed to be the oldest vintage in the world. Hi-Time Wine Cellar also stocks nearly every other hooch on the planet.

Confession: We don't really know much about liquor. We just know we like it. So if you've got a good dinner going on, or a certain drink you'd like to attempt to make, plan on making a trip to Hi-Time. No snooty clerks here—only a friendly, knowledgeable staff await. The sheer size of the place is impressive, with a huge walk-in refrigerator filled with all sorts of delicious beers with funny names you've never heard of, plus aisles and aisles of liquor and wine you have and haven't heard of in your life. A decent cheese, cracker and spread selection is also available, and Hi-Time even hosts private tastings. It's the kind of place you walk into for a bottle of Maker's and walk out with more booze than you'll ever know what to do with. Oh, wait, yes, you will: You'll drink it!

  • 2010 | Best Liquor Store

It's really, really hard to not give this award to Hi-Time, so this year, we decided, why fight it? There's just no competing with this family-owned behemoth of a liquor store in Costa Mesa. Its 24,000 square feet of exotic liquors, rare alcohol, walk-in humidifiers and beer refrigerators, plus a 3,000-square-foot underground maze of a wine cellar makes this the best liquor store in Orange County--make that the best on the West Coast. Gourmet foods and wine tastings ($10... More »

  • 2007 | Best Liquor Store

Even the mighty Beverages and More chain has nothing on this virtual mini-mall of vice under one roof. The claim to fame, as the name suggests, is an underground wine cellar some 3,000-square-feet in size that resembles a massive shoe store, with wine bottles on display instead of sneakers. There's a tasting bar, open in the afternoon, that occasionally goes less highbrow for such events as beer-and-chili-dog tastings. But then there's an entire upstairs, with a walk-in beer fridge,...
