Nestled within the Texas Medical Center and near the Museum District, Hermann Park exists as the city's center for recreation. Within its confines, you will find an 8-acre lake with ducks and pedal boats, a Japanese garden, a train, a walking trail, the Houston Zoo, a golf course, nature trails, Miller Outdoor Theater and a playground. Spot such birds as pine warblers, chickadees and red-bellied woodpeckers.
The Setup: For most native Houstonians, Hermann Park and the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool are as familiar to us as our own backyards. On May 18, during two afternoon performances, R... More »
The drought over the last few years has devastated many parts of Houston's parks and green spaces, but thankfully, there are still plenty of beautiful spots to enjoy. We're listing the best of them he... More »

With new rolling stock recently expanded to add more leg and ass room, the now-50-year-old Hermann Park train and its $3 ticket still offer some of the cheapest and gentlest thrills in town. The choo-choo travels just fast enough to bring some relief from the heat, and now that it has added actual stops -- one at the Museum of Natural Science, another at the Med Center and an actual connection to Houston's slightly less rinky-dink light rail train -- it's not just fun, it's also... Though thankfully Jim Crow ended generations ago, Houston is still often a segregated city, by social class if not by race. One of the few places you can see the 21st-century international mega-city in all its cosmopolitan glory is Hermann Park. There a typical day will find black families grilling out, Persian-American women riding pedal-boats, classrooms-full of field-tripping Hispanic kids aboard the somewhat new and improved choo-choo, and Rice students of every hue making eyes at one... There might be other places in the greater Houston area to chill on a pedal boat, but they're probably in wading pools in some sketchy dude's backyard. Regardless, they wouldn't be as pretty as the lush, green Hermann Park surroundings anyway. For $8, you get to spend a peaceful 30 minutes on clean water and in fresh air -- think of it as a respite from your daily commute, where the only scenery is the back of some dimwit's SUV. A nice outing on a pedal boat -- whether with a... More »
Where can you meet Inda the Orangutan, see Shakespeare under the stars or learn how to play the bongos? Where can you play on one of the first desegregated public golf courses in the U.S., meet a butterfly up close or ride a pedal boat? All while enjoying the great outdoors? Just one place: Hermann Park. The park has seen a resurgence in popularity, thanks to efforts by a dedicated conservancy group. Along with acres and acres of live oaks and tall pine trees, McGovern Lake, the Japanese... More »
Row upon row of golden and brown cocoons shiver at the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Soon an iridescent wing will slip from the husk, and another creature will join the spectacle under way in the towering glassed-in exhibit filled with colorful drifting wings and flowering plants. Within and without this sanctuary of wonder, the same process is occurring in the teams of children and adults that flock each year to Hermann Park: 445 acres of bejeweled nature, complete with nature trails,... Feel like getting away from traffic, construction and that freezing a/c in your office? Escape to Hermann Park and get yourself a pedal boat. These four-person beauties cost only $8 for a nice 30-minute cruise around the gorgeous park's eight-acre McGovern Lake. All ages are allowed, but at least one crew member must be 18 or older. During the holidays, the hours are extended and the boats are lit up like Christmas trees. Whether you're looking for a romantic time or fun for the whole... More »
