Description

Calling itself Fort Lauderdale's first Chinese restaurant, the establishment founded in the '50s still consistently serves some downright savory Szechuan, Mandarin, and Cantonese cuisine. There's never a doubt the fare is homemade; if you dine during the slow hours, you can watch the staff roll, stuff, and pinch the won tons. Then you can order them freshly boiled in the mixed egg drop-wonton soup or steamed as an appetizer. Thanks to the crisp vegetables that garnish everything from the house-special sirloin to the chow fun (broad noodles), Henry should just change the wording of his slogan from first to freshest.

Since 1959, the place has been dishing out Chinese food, from Szechuan to Mandarin to Cantonese, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 4 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday. All of it is pretty good stuff, though they do Szechuan best of all. Nice and spicy. The reasonable asking price, typically from $5 to $10, makes Henry's a viable option for all but the... More »

  • 2000 | Best Takeout Chinese

So the décor's not much to look at -- a couple of tables in a plain eatery stuck in a strip mall. But what do you care? You're here for the take-out, which is a good thing, because that's what this place specializes in. Choose your region: classic Cantonese, Mandarin, Szechuan. The woks here spew forth all manner and style of noodle dishes and stir-fry items, from chow fun to savory tofu. In addition the cooks are fast and the staff is efficient, so your order is finished, packed... More »

Henry's China House (745 SE 17th St., Fort Lauderdale, 954-763-3333) claims to be "Fort Lauderdale's first Chinese restaurant." Now, I'm not about to argue -- the place opened in the '50s and still consistently serves some downright savory... More »
