Surrounded by tiki torches and a canopy of foliage, directly off of the well-trekked Lake Avenue, Havana Hideout feels more like a relaxed backyard party than a stuffy culinary destination. Sit with the sand in your toes in one of several folding chairs and dig into plates of empanadas seasoned with ground beef, shredded cheese, caramelized onions and roasted potatoes, ceviche, quesadillas and tacos. Their pressed Cuban sandwich is legendary. Just ask The Food Network's Guy Fieri, of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, who came by for a cooking lesson.
Its no secret the economy is sputtering like an engine in dire need of a tune up. Once-vibrant downtown areas are floundering, especially on weekd...

Just as Lake Worth stubbornly refuses to shower, shave, and dress up for tourists, Havana Hideout remains an ungentrified gem. Sand crunches beneath your flip-flops when you sit at picnic tables shielded by thatched tiki huts. Beer and sangria are served in plastic cups, and there's no gin or tonic here. On cool nights, the regulars crowd inside at the tiny bar, but on Taco Thursdays -- when tacos are $1.50 apiece -- the outdoor picnic tables overflow with people. Always, there is... More »
Let's be honest: There's no good reason to eat a fat-ass fish taco at 1 o'clock in the morning. The human body doesn't physiologically need beef empanadas or chocolate chili pepper ice cream before it's content to go to sleep. So if you're eating hot-pressed Cuban sandwiches or ceviche with avocado around the same time Craig Ferguson signs off for the evening, it's probably because you've indulged in more than your fair share of alcohol. And that's what makes Havana Hideout so great. Not... More »
Tiki-tacky Havana Hideout is what most South Florida dining looked like 30 years ago -- a bar under open air and thatch, plus a minuscule, shadowy mouse hole indoors. Before we got gentrified and supersized, before the chains and celeb chefs from California and New York found out we were hoarding paradise, any Floridian could follow the path pounded smooth by many flip-flops to some joint grilling burgers and fish sandwiches. A guy would be mangling Neil Young covers on his beat-up... More »
