Even Castro would endorse capitalism like this. Authentic comidas Cubanas like tostones, paella and arroz con pollo served in an attractive, intimate environment. The black bean soup is revolutionary. After 5 p.m., sip sherry and sample tapas upstairs in Arriba.

As you might surmise from my pork-lovin' Tar Heel roots, there's nothing I adore more than a mass of shredded swine. But here in the desert, so far from the slaughterhouses of my native North Carolina, I've rarely come across restaurateurs who... More »
I love this Havana Cafe. One of my co-worker's relatives work here. She is so nice and so is the rest of the staff. Parking can be a pain, but once you find a spot, it's worth it!
Great food. Get a Pussers Painkiller to start the meal off
We never tire of visiting the various Havana Cafes owned and operated by B.J. and Gilbert Hernandez. We have a dream, a dream that torments us nightly, and causes us to awaken in hunger. In a fit of suicidal madness, we jump, hitting the soft crème caramel with a plop and slowly... More »
Over there, it's pronounced "cuisine de Cooba." Over here, it's pronounced Havana Cafe. However you say it, Havana Cafe is tiny but classy, and the breadth of the menu is breathtaking. We find it hard to choose, so we love the combinacion de favoritas -- a mouth-watering platter of moros (white rice cooked with black beans), tamal Cubano (tamale of fresh ground corn, pork and sofrito seasoning), yucca frita (a fried, potatolike vegetable), platanos maduros fritos (fried ripe plantain), and... Fidel Castro-style fatigues, bad hangovers from Bacardi rum, Elián Gonzalez -- these are a few of our favorite Cuban things. But none can hold a candle to good Cuban black bean soup, a Caribbean classic raised to a memorable art form by Havana Cafe. Originally hailing from Havana themselves, cafe owners B.J. and Gilbert Hernandez must be genetically predisposed to knowing how to whip up an unbeatable, down-island version of sopa de frijoles negros, laced with generous amounts of garlic....
