Description

Landon Schoenefeld has a reputation for having a creative mind and an intense work ethic-as well as an impulsive, volatile personality. His legacy at the Bulldog NE, for starters, is one of mustard munitions, not first-rate hamburgers. But these days, Schoenefeld is leading the next wave of young turks to launch their own eateries. Haute Dish, then, is Schoenefeld's chance to convince diners to focus on his talent, not his temper. The restaurant, located in the former home of Café Havana, has high ceilings, pretty woodwork, vintage charm and feels very personal, as if decisions were made on gut instinct, not using focus groups or demographic data. Haute Dish's menu has a humble artiness: It's French-meets-Midwest, with a kiss of kitsch. Many of the house specialties might be characterized as man food, being rich, meat-based, and hearty: middle-American classics reinterpreted and refined. The signature Hot Dish is a deconstructed casserole and it's highly recommended. As are other playful dishes such as General Tso's sweetbreads and the steak and eggs, a spread of beef tartare, fried-egg-in-a-hole with a bloody Mary oyster shooter.

  • 2012 | Best Sunday Brunch

Do you only consider it brunch if it includes multiple trips to a buffet line, mealy home fries in a warming tray, and a chocolate fondue fountain? Then you may have to broaden your definition and prepare to experience blended-meal bliss at Haute Dish. The consistently creative eatery has a penchant for combining sweet and savory components to transform familiar dishes -- like its chicken and waffles, which come with a scoop of maple bacon ice cream -- into unexpected, playful new... • 2011 | Best Late-Night Dining

Haute Dish offers a classy alternative to the chaotic bar-and-club scene along Hennepin and First avenues in downtown Minneapolis. Late in the evening the barstools are mostly all filled, but the crowds aren't crushing. The music is loud enough to give the place buzz but not so cranked up that you have to resort to shouting. After a night of drinking, the meat-heavy menu from chef-owner Landon Schoenefeld makes for some fine alcohol-tempering fare. Crackling fried chicken, on a bed of greens... More »

  • 2002 | BEST FOOD CRIME

As if naming their restaurant after our restaurant section weren't enough, this snappy little reincarnation of the Minneapolis Table of Contents has perpetrated a series of serious offenses against food tradition. Prosciutto on escargots. Mu shu duck wrapped in crepes. Tater tots formed of risotto. And for dessert, small cinnamon doughnuts to dip in hot lemon curd. But of course. And yet somehow they've managed to pull it off! This is the Twin Cities' first Gen Y restaurant, serving Bento... More »
