Don't be fooled by the huge, colorful flame painted on the wall of Harvey's Smokehouse BBQ. The place is more substance than style. Tucked away in a strip mall on Old Cutler Road, Harvey's is little more than a counter with a kitchen. A spattering of tables allows for sit-down dining, but the only reason to eat there is if you can't wait to get home to sink your teeth into the beef brisket or pulled pork platter. In less than a year, the eatery has established itself as the best barbecue joint in Cutler Bay. Harvey's offers the usual array of barbecue treats - chicken, baby back ribs and wings - all slathered in your choice of four sauces: Harvey's original, Tennessee spice red, Carolina mustard, or KC-style sweet 'n' tangy. But that's where the typical ends. The heart of Harvey's menu is the short stacks sandwiches and the "plate it up" platters. Pick either the Carolina pulled pork ($8.25 sandwich, $9.25 platter) or the Southern beef brisket ($8.25 sandwich, $12.25 platter) to experience slow-cooked meet at its South Miami-Dade best. You have to wait a bit for your order, but it's worth it. Plus there's nothing like the smell of meat cooking to get you in the mood to gorge. Bread pudding and a seasonal cobbler round out the menu with a sweet touch.
