It may be cash-only (boooooo!), but Hans' Homemade Ice Cream is well-worth a trip to the ATM. More traditional flavors are definitely up there-Swiss Orange Chip tastes like an orange Toblerone!-but it's the seasonal flavors that are really worthy: pumpkin, peach and even watermelon. Nothing's so sweet that it leaves a fuzzy coat on your tongue, but please take note of the freezer case just to the right of the door filled with chocolate-covered bananas and these wondrous things called munchies-basically an ice-cream-oatmeal-cookie sammie dipped in chocolate and put on a stick. This time of year, ice-cream shops everywhere churn out pumpkin-pie ice cream, and some of that will get turned into tempting seasonal milkshakes. The best comes from one of Orange County's older restaurants, Hans' Homemade, open since 1972. The old-time ice-cream parlor feel is the real deal that corporate chains try so hard to copy--from the marble-topped wooden counters, padded stools and tiled floors down to the old-fashioned milkshake machines with the swirly wands. Choose from any... More »
