Also known as Korea House, the restaurant offers everything from basic kun man doo (dumplings) and bulgoki (Korean barbecued beef) to more exotic stuff such as elaborate soup dishes based on tripe and intestines. There's also plenty of pan chan, a selection of side dishes in small round bowls, including bean sprouts lightly dressed in sesame oil; lightly sauced seaweed; the ubiquitous kimchee, pickled cabbage liberally dosed with hot red pepper; and a preparation of dried squid with overtones of ham or bacon.
I'll begin this accounting of last year's final month with a restaurant that technically closed this month -- yesterday, in fact: La Dolce Via. The Forest Park Southeast bakery, winner of multiple Bes... More »
Over the weekend, a tipster told Gut Check via Twitter that Korea House, previously known as Han Gook Kwan, (1261 Castillons Arcade Plaza, Creve Coeur; 314-878-8893) wasn't open for dinner on Friday e... More »
Just last month, Saveur magazine, probably my favorite food periodical, proclaimed Korean food the "least-known great Asian cuisine in the U.S.A." Quite coincidentally, we'd already decided to embark on our own local quest for kun man doo,... More »
Hangook Kwan doesn't draw much attention to itself. The Korean restaurant, a.k.a Korea House, is located near the back corner of a shopping plaza that is barely visible from bustling Olive Boulevard. Inside, the décor is modest, the music soft, the service unobtrusive. All of which makes the food stand out even more, from the most familiar Korean dishes such as the rice and egg dish bibimbap to the sizzling beef bulgogi to the standout (and occasionally) very spicy stews and pork dishes. Korean barbecue is also available — though not at every table — but you might be most pleased by the ban chan, the array of mostly cold dishes included with your meal. Go slowly, though: Those red flecks decorating cucumber and cabbage alike are red-pepper flakes.

Hangook Kwan looks like the quintessential semifinished basement of the 1980s: spacious, equipped with a wide-screen television, a fish tank, a few photos and an it's-OK-if-you-spill-down-here air. The decor plays an indifferent supporting role to top-flight Korean cuisine. Start with the spicy cabbage condiment/appetizer known as kimchee and steamed or fried pork dumplings; then move on to a classic specialty like bi bom bop, a rice, beef, and vegetable dish served piping hot in a clay bowl t...
