In early 2012, Handsome Coffee Roasters opened a coffeehouse in downtown’s Arts District, in a gorgeous minimalist warehouse building (lots of white! metal everywhere! loft ceilings!) that makes the place less resemble a coffee bar, retail space and open roastery than a seriously upscale meth lab. The hopped-up brainchild of former Intelligentsia employees Michael Phillips (2010 World Barista Champion), Tyler Wells and Chris Owens, Handsome quickly became a destination spot, and not only for coffee. Pop-up taquerias and farmers markets have installed themselves nearby, while the locals flock to Handsome as, well, one would to one’s dealer. Rightly so, as the coffee produced here is pretty stunning. Order a pulled shot, or a cup of brew made to exacting standards from beans sourced from Honduras, El Salvador, Kenya, Colombia -- or wherever and whatever your barista recommends. Sometimes these decisions are best left to the experts.
