Description

The cleanest and most inviting of the Richmond District's numerous grill-at-your-table Korean barbecue joints, Han Il Kwan serves some of the best panchan (an array of appetizers and side dishes included in the price of the entrees) in San Francisco. The kim chee is sometimes so fresh it's a bit fizzy, and the housemade fish cake is worth a trip. Sometimes the spread includes hot dishes such as fried mung bean cakes or grilled squid. Among the main dishes, try the grilled pork marinated in spicy sauce, or the homey bi bim bap, rice topped with beef, vegetables, and a raw egg, served in a stoneware bowl so hot that it keeps making new crispy rice crust for twenty minutes. Call ahead if you prefer to grill over charcoal rather than gas.
