An original on Palm Beach, this burger stop is a step back in time, where omelets are whipped by hand, malted milks are spun in ancient blenders, and the burger is still king. Rub elbows with anyone and everyone, including some senior islanders who've been coming here since they opened in 1945. In season, tourists crowd the joint, so locals order takeout -- convenient anyway. Big, fluffy omelets are what to order at breakfast, especially if Melvin, the wonder cook everybody knows by name, is at the grill. The huge horseshoe counter anchors the room, and a few tables are scattered around the place, where servers might be as old as their countertop and cranky too. The don't-miss things here are the mushroom-Swiss cheeseburger and malted milk shake -- though the ice-cream floats are a worthy drink as well. Those watching red meats can go for turkey burgers or vegetarian versions; salads and soups are another option. You may not have room for the mile-high coconut cake or pie, but pack a piece to go.
