Description

Anchoring a Montrose shopping center near Allen Parkway and Stages Repertory Theater, Guava Lamp is a swanky refuge from the workday and lively den of activity on the weekends. Touted as Houston's premiere video lounge, the bar invites customers to cozy up to the ample couch or booth seating as the screens flicker videos from Madonna, Whitney Houston and numerous other beloved divas. The glowing bar packed with top-shelf liquor offers daily specials, including $4 Jager Blasters on Sundays, explaining the wall of empty green bottles the bar sports like a badge. Guava Lamp hosts periodic live music and is known for its packed Karaoke Wednesdays.

    Where the Boys Are

Guava Lamp (570 Waugh) is indeed a gay bar. Most of the time, informing someone the place they've just wandered into is a gay bar is about as necessary as letting them know their facial hair is on fire. For example, at Montrose's Ripcord... More »

    GUAVA LAMP'S FRENCH MARTINI

The ambience was dark and inviting when I entered The Guava Lamp (570 Waugh Drive, 713-524-3359), and the provocative music videos were a welcome change from the primaries and sports. The place was packed with partiers saying goodbye to one... More »

  • 2005 | Best Gay Bar

We were big fans of Guava Lamp in its old location, tucked away over there at Shepherd and Richmond, but we like its digs on Waugh even better. The new circular bar, covered in copper-colored tiles, just makes it a lot easier to check out who's checking us out. The clientele seems to have remained pretty much the same, and local poet-comedian-cutie Todd Gresley is still hosting kick-ass karaoke on Wednesday nights. This place really is perfect for when you don't want to deal with the Pacific... More »
