Description

Griff's Burger Bar is an old-fashioned drive-thru where you can still get a great burger, a greasy bag of fries and a skull-splittingly thick milkshake for about a five-spot. One of the last remaining links in a burger-and-milkshake empire that once could have given McDonald's a run for its money, the Broadway Griff's continues to thrive, its popularity sustained by nostalgia and the savage loyalty of its regulars.

  • 2009 | Best Drive-Thru Burger

Denver doesn't have an In-N-Out burger. But it has the next best thing: a Griff's, one of the few survivors of an also-ran chain in the burger wars of the last century. We love the weird, lost-outpost vibe of this Griff's, the sense that this spot has been cut off from history and forgotten by the powers that once brought it into being. And if we were ever going to get a tattoo, Griffy -- the psychotic, lobotomized clown mascot of Griff's -- would be high on our list of possible... More »

  • 2007 | Best Taste of What Might've Been

The exact history of the Griff's Burger Bar chain is somewhat sketchy, but had the fast-food industry gone a little differently, we like to think that Griff's might have been a victor in the drive-thru burger war. We can imagine a time when Griff's -- not Burger King, not McDonald's -- would have come out on top and blanketed the world with its weird, A-frame, car-cult cheeseburgery goodness. Why Because a Griff's burger kicks the shit out of anything served at Mickey D's. So does a Griff's... More »

  • 2004 | Best Dinner Under $5

Back in the day, Griff's could have given McDonald's a run for its money. But today is not that day. Now, as you pull off Broadway into a parking lot dwarfed by the I-25 interchange, you see the remains of a chain that coulda been a contender -- one of the last surviving locations of an empire that once covered several states. The board of fare sketched out on Griff's menu is dominated by the classics: burgers, fries and milkshakes, all assembled with care. The oddly named Giant burger... More »

  • 2003 | Best Route-66-Style A-Frame Drive-Thru

Finding a great classic drive-thru on Route 66 wouldn't be a surprise -- but in the middle of busy Broadway Still, the traffic on this artery can make you feel like you're on an interminable road trip without even leaving the city limits, so pull over and treat yourself. Griff's serves up burgers wrapped in waxed paper, along with fries and shakes at prices better suited to a time when the cost of gas didn't make just idling in the drive-thru lane the most expensive part of dinner. Bite Me

This just in: Griff's Burger Bar at 742 South Broadway, for which I just professed my undying love ("Cheeseburgers in Paradise," October 2), is no longer serving, well, anything. Early last Friday, just a day after my review hit the stands, Griff'... More »

    Cheeseburgers in Paradise

    | Thu, October 02, 2003

In the beginning there was the hamburger, and it was good. Back at the dawn of American cuisine (I'm talking the '30s -- the goddamn Paleozoic Era, foodwise) there was the hamburger, and all things sprang forth from it. Sure, we had our Betty Cr... More »
