The multilevel Green Room is the latest addition to the America's Backyard/Revolution family, providing the downtown Fort Lauderdale locale with a unique nighttime hangout. Although chic in décor with white leather couches, fancy lighting systems, and Marie Antoinette-style chandeliers, the attitude is far from that of red-velvet roped-off club. An enormous dance floor fills up the center of the club where the local hip 20-somethings gyrate to indie sounds and electro beats. Adjacent is the stage, often filled with musical acts from the local area, and the occasional burlesque troupe performance by the Reckless Dames. Newly installed is the venue's art gallery, a place for South Florida's up-and-coming artists to showcase their talent during weekly event "Gallery Saturdays." Focusing less on the VIP club concept, the Green Room is Fort Lauderdale's answer to a laid-back night of good times and dancing with friends.
Those who hunger for the ecstasy of movement (these people exist) know that if you're a true hip-shaker, all you need is ground. A true dancer or d...
There's just something in the summer air that makes celebrating our lady 'murica feel especially right. June's around the corner, the summer heat is here to stay, and all the school kids are about to ... More »
In real life, the Suede Dudes are some cool cucumbers. But on stage, they bring the sludgiest, surfiest, fuzziest psych, and a weird, dark energy, strong enough to lure any sweet-faced pigeon-toed tee... More »
This Friday night, don’t be surprised if you spot Spider-Man grinding a sexy anime character at Fort Lauderdale indie club Green Room. Why, you ask? Because it is the last Friday of the month, when the downtown haunt hosts its Cos-Play Fridays.... More »
Hipster is such a nebulous and obnoxious term. But if you say that you don't want to use this weird word, all eyes land on you accusingly. Now you seem like the hipster in the room who is merely insul... More »
This Saturday night, everyone gets to read the fortunes of the Green Room's art director, Gina Bentivegna. It doesn't matter if they are tarot card readers. For her debut solo exhibition, the gifted artist has culled psychic readings done on her... More »
You've got on tight pants, and so does he. You're drinking PBR, and so is she. You both share a few flirty smiles on the dance floor as you booty-dance ironically to the "Tootsie Roll." It's hipster love at first sight. This type of love connection can occur only underneath the glittering chandelier at the Green Room at one of its various hipster dance nights during the week. Week after week, the too-cool-for-school 20-something crowd flocks to the dance floor at the Green Room to shake its... More »
Each week at Digital Love Thursdays, the fashion-savvy indie dance crowd bounced, grinned, and threw back PBRs as DJs Mig and Sweetswirl served up just the right jams. Mixing tracks freshly picked out of the blogosphere with old-school classics, Mig and Sweetswirl never ceased to give the room the beat it needs: When it was time for a sing-along, a Smiths tune inevitably took over the room. When it was time for something new, a track from a local artist made its way into the mix. Always... More »
The Green Room has taken downtown Fort Lauderdale and slapped it upside the head with good music and a helluva lotta dancing. The rise of hip-hop haven Brown Bag Wednesdays sweetens the tragic loss of the once-popular dance party Digital Love at the same spot. Sweetens it with quarts of Colt 45 and impromptu dance-offs. Not only do Brown Bag Wednesdays bring the malt liquor; they bring cozies that resemble brown bags. How's that for almost authentic? Kicking off this one-nighter -- one... More »
Our tale started a few months ago, when we marched right into downtown Fort Lauderdale, demanding to dance. At the first dance floor we tried, napkins littered the ground, '90s hip-hop blasted out of the speakers, and the lighting made us feel like we were dancing at high noon. No, thank you, America's Backyard. We then strolled down Second Street, perked our ears at each door, and... next, next, next. Finally, we heard "Stayin' Alive," so we strutted inside, but that pitch-black dance floor... More »
Recipe for debauchery: 1. Mix equal parts class, decadence, and people dressed too well to stay downstairs at America's Backyard.2. Sprinkle in some immaculate white VIP couches, glittering chandeliers, and anything-goes stripper poles.3. Add a pinch of smut.4. Blend in liberal amounts of champagne, Lady Gaga tunes, and drunken party girls in mile-high heels.5. Now throw it all on a crowded dance floor and jump directly into the middle. You won't stay sober. Or celibate. More »
