Description

We have no idea whether Achilles munched on moussaka or lapped up avgolemono when he wasn't out making mincemeat of Priam's army during the Trojan War. But if the Greek warrior were alive and still kickin' butt, he could do worse than to sup on swordfish souvlaki or pig out on pita and hummus at this high-end Greek grub shack. Greekfest offers some of the best Greek vittles in the Valley, set in upscale surroundings: hardwood floors, arched windows, antiques, and tchotchkes from Aegean isles, and a traditional color theme of eggshell white and sky blue.

  • 2011 | Best Greek Restaurant

Our romance with Greekfest began with a craving for rack of lamb, and it got messy -- in a good way -- when we also fell in love with this wonderful Greek restaurant's mousaka. And its pastitsio. And its youvetsi! But back to that lamb: You can have it in any number of Greek configurations -- exohiko, arni psito, or just a simple, lemony rack of lamb, with the robust spices of this gourmet palace. Fresh seafood (the best halibut, swordfish, and salmon) and superb Greek fare serve... More »

  • 2009 | Best Greek Restaurant

In the middle of this parched desert metropolis, Greekfest is as refreshing as a balmy Mediterranean breeze gently wafting through a seaside taverna. With its pristine white walls and wood-beamed ceilings that remind us of the rustic charm of the Old Country, this friendly Greek eatery is where we go when we want to unwind with family and friends over a lavish, leisurely meal. While the gyro and other fast foods seem to be typical of many Greek restaurants in the Valley, Greekfest sticks to... More »

  • 2006 | BEST GREEK RESTAURANT

You don't have to be Greek to yearn for the Old Country when you step through the doors of this relaxed, elegant eatery, where white stucco walls, wood-beam ceilings, and displays of folk art and pottery create a welcoming, taverna-like atmosphere. Effortless authenticity extends to the menu, too, with Hellenic favorites like taramosalata, a creamy caviar dip tinged with lemon; cheesy, gooey moussaka, with ground lamb and eggplant; and sizzling souvlaki, made with marinated lamb, chicken, or... • 2003 | BEST GREEK RESTAURANT

Greekfest owners Tony and Susan Makridis wish us "kali orexi" -- have a good appetite. And man, we're going to need it, because with one look at their expansive menu, we know we've got to have it all. This is a taverna absolutely brimming with good times (yes, the cheerful waiters yell "opa!" when they flame our saganaki cheese), and great food. Steaming ceramic crocks of moussaka, pastitsio and youvetsi are sublime pasta-meat casseroles. Lamb and chicken turn on a souvla over crackling... More »

  • 2001 | Best Greek Restaurant

If Helen had a face that could launch a thousand ships, then Greekfest serves entrees that can launch a thousand tips. Greekfest has been our favorite for too many years to count, and somehow, it keeps getting better. Owners Susan and Tony Makridis have built an empire of the senses, with stunning flavors, a Grecian palace setting, and personality so charming we can't help but shout "Opa!" when our saganaki arrives. How could we restrain, as the mild kefalograviera cheese is soaked with... More »

  • 2000 | Best Greek Restaurant

The Greeks had a word for it. And after dining at Greekfest, so do Arizonans: Delicious! What makes Greekfest so great For one thing, owners Susan and Tony Makridis don't hold back on flavors, tempting us with dishes heavily perfumed by aromatic olive oil, lemon, garlic, dill, mint, oregano and other herbs. The variety of dishes is a mouth-watering romp through the Greek countryside. Whether you're in the mood for oktapodi skaras (grilled octopus in cabernet sauce), shrimp saganaki... More »
