This is the oenophile's alternative to the owner's other spot, Against the Grain, a craft beer bar located next door. Here the focus is on an eclectic, ever-changing selection of wines served by the bottle and quarto. The wine list, which includes a nice selection of sparkling varieties, doesn't have a particular focus other than the owner picked his favorites, regardless of country or style. Share from a menu of contemporary American small plates including a scallop ceviche, braised short ribs with polenta and seared yellowfin tuna, plus a variety of pizzas, sandwiches and cheese plates. Beer nerds have a sizeable selection of craft and high-end imported brews to choose from. Rustic is the predominant aesthetic here; dark-stained wooden tables, exposed brick, wrought-iron bar stools and dangling chandeliers all combine to create a homey atmosphere. Situated in the middle of a tree-lined East Village block between Avenues B and C, just down from a school, there is an old-fashioned-looking lamp post stationed outside a wine bar called Grape and Grain. Next to it is its sister/brother bar, Against the Grain, a smaller, beer-focused spot with 20 some brews and stools crowded around a high table in its center. (You can get wine there, too.) A personal favorite...cozy little place to meet with friends for a drink and a little bite to eat. The pizza is great...olive and goat cheese!
