Description

It has always been worth the drive south of USC to the Mercado la Paloma, if only to order a few of chef Gilberto Cetina's fantastic cochinita pibil tacos. After Cetina closed his Macarthur Park restaurant and the little market stall became the only place to get his Yucatecan cuisine, it's been even more worth the trip. Sit in the pretty marketplace and order the antojitos, the tacos, the tamales, or anything else on Cetina's menu -- and do not forget the housemaid habanero sauce, which you can also get to-go.

  • 2010 | Best Taste of the Old Downtown (1917)

Ride the Angels Flight Railway 298 feet over the steep slope between Hill and Olive streets for 25 cents a turn while consuming a giant mango-beet-cauliflower juice from Tropical Zone and a Jose Chiquito taco the size of two burritos from Grand Central Market. The total expenditure for such an adventure comes to about $5. At the market, people on tight budgets find produce, nuts, liquor, meat, fish, fresh bread, spices, organic soap and a Chinese massage -- all in one stop. Jones Grain... More »
