A spinoff of the raw-foods restaurant chain Cafe Gratitude, Gracias Madre serves affordable, healthful vegan Mexican food made with organic, local ingredients - and much less of its parent's preachy attitude. The menu at this Mission District restaurant changes with the seasons, but dishes like the vegan posole with a cashew-cream swirl; the vegetable tacos on freshly griddled tortillas; and the quesadilla with pumpkin, caramelized onions, and a toasted-pumpkinseed salsa are hearty and far from bland. It's the kind of food you'd imagine was dreamed up by Moosewood Cookbook-toting hippies wintering on the Oaxacan coast.
