Chef Alfred Portales has been at the helm of this Village mainstay since 1984. Despite helping to mold the New American culinary movement, his menu remains refreshingly inventive. International influences abound: yellowfin tuna tartare, Thai-spiced Maine lobster and green tomato gazpacho are just a few of Portales' current creations. Cap off your meal with one of pastry chef Deborah Racicot's white chocolate ice cream sandwiches or an artisanal cheese plate. Sampling his Michelin-starred cuisine without dropping a lot of cash is easier at lunch when the restaurant offers a $31 prix fixe menu. As for the crowd, think professionals kicking back after work, looking for excellent but not stuffy service and a good drink from the creative cocktail list or the lengthy wine list (which is divided by country). The design scheme is sophisticated New York cool, with artwork from the likes of everyone from Philip-Lorca di Corcia to Diane Arbus gracing the walls and billowy light fixtures hanging above.—Keith Wagstaff
