Too often tobacco shops are geared toward folks just looking to pick up a pack of Marlboros or a crappy glass pipe--not a place true fans of America's carcinogen would be seen frequenting. The Golden Leaf, on the other hand, offers a champagne smoke-shop experience. Purchases are made on a solid bar-style wooden counter lined with big glass jars containing Golden Leaf's pipe tobacco blends. A roomy humidor lets you browse hundreds of cigars at your leisure. Large, comfy leather chairs... More »
The main problem at Golden Leaf is finding enough room for all the plaques the shop wins year in, year out. Clearly, these folks are doing something right. We think it has something to do with their exhaustive selection: As always, you'll find a wide array of cigars, pipes, and loose tobacco. Can't find those wicked German smokes you discovered in Munich? Look no further. The Golden Leaf's famed walk-in humidor still boasts upward of 800 stogies from the world's finest producers. Stepping into the Golden Leaf is like taking a little field trip to a temple of tobacco. The near-intoxicating aroma of Burleys and Cavendishes, as well as the store's kaleidoscopic pipe and cigarette selection, can leave even the most diffident non-inhaler feeling just a bit enraptured. But the real benedictions lie in the shop's climate and humidity-controlled humidor, where, like cylindrical angels, some cigar-shaped objects soar upwards of 50 dollars. Fortunately, the high priests behind... More »

Once you get your bearings and realize you're still in Calhoun Square, you're free to peruse the shop's walk-in humidor (a fascinating lesson in cigar lore in and of itself), as well as its ample selection of pipe tobaccos (with pipes to... There are so many variations on the tobacco lover's habit that sometimes it can be difficult to settle on a preferred method for getting a fix. Even today's range of common tobacco products--from mass-packaged cigarettes to hand-rolled cigars to leafy loose tobacco for hand-carved pipes--are really just the tip of the cigar (so to speak). After all, civilizations past have been using tobacco in myriad ways going back to its discovery 18,000 years ago. People at various epochs have drunk... More »
When the Golden Leaf opened 17 years ago, there were just a half-dozen or so cigar shops scattered about the Twin Cities. How things have changed. By the peak of the Nineties cigar craze, some 60 specialty stores had popped up in the metro, with many offering smokes at steeply discounted prices. Despite that boom--and the competition from online tobacco sellers catering to smokers looking to dodge taxes--longtime Golden Leaf manager Kent Charron says the store has hung on to its core...
