Description

Nobody suggests there's anything sophisticated about traditional Czech cooking; no famous chefs have emerged to refine the country's cuisine, to try to fuse it (Czech-Asian? Slovak-Norwegian-Californian?) and dazzle us with the results. But there are Czech treasures that aren't extolled in guidebooks or found in tourist restaurants, treasures that appear on kitchen tables all over the country -- and at Golden Europe. Visiting this restaurant is like going to your middle-European auntie's house for dinner on a Friday when you're craving schnitzel, spaetzle, mushroom gravy, duck or pork with bread dumplings and, for dessert, fruit dumplings or apple strudel with cream. The cuisine is Czech, German and Austrian, the portions are large, and the food all homemade, filling and tasty; Wine and Czech beer are also available. The building that houses Golden Europe was once a Pizza Hut, and the dining room is bright, clean and open, with photographs of the Tyrol on the walls and a large cowbell hanging by the door.
