Jonesing for some live music in the East Valley? Pilot your ride on over to the Goat Head Saloon. Tucked into the corner of a Mesa strip mall, this expansive bar and venue is where fans of both rock and hip-hop head to partake in weekend shows by a slew of talented local bands and acts. One evening, its gifted lyricists bringing their best on the microphone while backed by phat beats. The following night, however, the Goat Head becomes the domain of a crew of classic rockers serving up thunderous covers or crowd-pleasing hits. An array of Americana, folk, and rock musicians also take to the colorfully-lit stage area at this charming wood-paneled bar during various weekday open mic events and jam sessions. Several pool tables are also on the premises should you feel like proving your billiards superiority.
We're lucky in the Valley of the Sun. There are plenty of hole-in-the-wall venues, which, in most enthusiasts' opinion, are the best places to see a great show. Especially when it comes to hard rock a... More »
There's plenty to be worried about these days. Just off the top of our heads, there's the very real possibility of a Mitt Romney presidency, the horrors of the ever-lagging economy, and all that folde... More »
Not just anyone can say they used to jam with a highly acclaimed musician like Frank Zappa -- but Valley based Latin/funk rocker Robert "Frog" Camarena can -- he played in Ruben and the Jets, a group ... More »

Guitarist Sonny Decarlo readily admits that his sludge metal/crustpunk quintet Kuato & Quaid probably won't to amount to much in the grand scheme of things. Ditto for his other groups PV Casualties,... More »
Here's some groovy news for you: Ever since opening its doors last spring, Goat Head Saloon has become a destination place for fans of jam rock. Every month, this charming Mesa watering hole hosts gigs by bands specializing in the funky, Grateful Dead-style genre, usually featuring extended solos and fits of psychedelic jamming. Groups such as Xtra Ticket, Endoplasmic, and The Noodles perform here regularly, as do such out-of-towners as 3 Ugly Guys and Alfred Howard and the K23 Orchestra. The place evokes the spirit of the old Sail Inn (the infamous bygone east Valley jam-rock hangout), with the usual crowd of granola-munchers and tie-dyed types turning out for shows. It's not all hippies, however, as a varied crowd of rock 'n' roll fans make the trip to Goat Head every week to have a funky time.
Saw their ad in the Phoenix New Times and had to check it out for myself. I'm so glad I did because this is now one of my favorite places for live music on the weekends and week days!
never know what you get here... hip hop wanna be bar now? but it used to be a good biker bar. multiple reports of tab being inflated at the end of the night. shows that start at 7 dont start til 9.. better places to go imo
Attending open mic nights at Valley bars is often akin to being an excited kid on Christmas morn: You're hoping for something good, like an unsigned troubadour who croons beautifully, instead of something lousy, which in this case might be some no-talent freakazoid who should be singing only in the shower. Thankfully, the wanna-be musicians, comedians, poets, and other participants at the weekly acoustic/electric open mic at Goat Head generally fall into the first category. Sure, the... More »

If you're really a Guinness drinker, then you know how hard it is to find Guinness in this town, poured like it was meant to be served: warm, in a pint glass, by someone who knows what they're doing. You know how to wait for it, mouth watering, watching until the slow fizzle of the light brown bubbles clears to the top and leaves the body dark, thick and pitch black. Ah . . . Guinness. The beer that eats like a meal. Unfortunately, most bars around here serve it cold, in a frosty glass,... More »
