The stew fish at this Trinidadian café is wonderful, a big slab of fried kingfish smeared with tangy tomato gravy and plumped down on a bed of well-oiled rice and peas. Also fantastic is the goat roti, crammed with halal meat and curried potatoes, so carefully constructed that you can pick it up and eat it like a sandwich. If you dare, wash it down with Mauby, a beverage that tastes like a cross between bubble gum and quinine.

Glenda's specializes in the Trinidadian treat that fills a crepelike pancake with a rich, savory curry in which the main ingredient may be anything from conch to chickpeas. The simple chicken roti is superb--a mix of curried bone-in fowl and potato scented with cumin and coriander. Wash it down with some roseate homemade sorrel or bitter mauby. More »
