Everything about the place is smart, starting with the lofty, industrial, urban-chic décor that bespeaks big city, late night, youth, energy, and fun. Comestibles are categorized into noodle bowls and rice bowls (three of each); "raw" and "grill" items (five of each); and a quartet of "basics." Just about every dish delights: two fluffy, white, taco-shaped roasted-pork buns; shreds of braised short ribs compacted into a "meat loaf" with smoky plantain sauce; a BLT with brown-sugar-cured pork belly on griddled bao buns with a small jar of ginger-pickled cucumbers and cauliflower alongside; steak chow fun; pork ramen with organic egg; and so forth. Prices represent incredible value - dishes start at $3 and rise to only $16. Pabst Blue Ribbon is just $2, and Sapporo on draft costs just $3. Mini nondairy ice-cream cones go for a buck apiece, but try the homemade carrot cake or peach crumble - like all else at Gigi, delectable and a great deal.

Really bad service. In the last two occasions I was there the service was awful. Waiters that didn't know the specials of the night, that forgot my main course and brought the dessert menu instead. Main course that come with half the ingredients (duck with cauliflower truffle puree, came without the cauliflower truffle puree) wen I complained she got upset and the manager brought a dessert on the house, after we told him we did not want it. On another occasion they charged an extra glass of wine, (we had only one, charged for two) and manager wouldn't take it off of the bill, offered ice cream instead (?) with a bad attitude and when we were ready to go. Really bad experiences. Food ok
It wasn't that long ago when Miami postclub dining implied a meal at Denny's or some regrettable late-night pizza joint lighted like a neon carnival. But now that we have Gigi, which stays open until 2 a.m. on weeknights and until 5 a.m. on weekends, that middle-of-the-night Grand Slam looks more and more like a Grand Whiff. Gigi is a brilliantly conceived restaurant -- fun, delicious, Asian-accented food freshly prepared and sold at eminently affordable prices. Take the "Southern boy"... More »
