It's funny that this hotel is named after the grandfather of the American musical. A more apt name would be the Warhol or the Lichtenstein, judging from the pop art decor and funky architecture. (In fact, one of Warhol's Cambell's Soup cans hangs in their lobby.) This chic hotel offers maximum amenities (free breakfast, complimentary Internet access) for minimum cost. Just don't expect your room to be huge.

Anyone who's walked up Fifth Avenue from the Flatiron Building has probably noticed the GERSHWIN HOTEL: It's a fire-engine-red building from the 1920s, with giant flame-like ornaments spiraling up.
