Description

According to chef Halabi Gazala, her place is the only Druze restaurant in the United States. Druze are an insular tribe that spreads across the Middle East (the chef grew up in Israel), practicing a religion related to Islam and Greek Gnosticism. The food is mostly familiar, but with some incredible twists. The pitas, for example, are thin, whole-wheat, gigantic, and cooked on a domed contraption in the window. Also displayed in that window are a range of mainly vegetarian flaky stuffed bureks, which make perfect carry-around meals. The menu runs from grilled meats (pick lamb kafta) to salads of phreak (smoked wheat) to bread dips featuring eggplant and fava beans in various combinations.

If you're accustomed to thinking of Middle Eastern food as a bland collection of bread dips and kebabs, you haven't been to Gazala Place. The whole fried orata ($22.95) is a magnificent sight as it swims to the table on a long platter. The sleek s... More »
