This small, dimly-lit Japanese joint is marked by outdated décor and Kendall-strip-mall ambiance. But an extremely friendly and helpful staff and a reasonably priced and extensive menu keep the place packed and busy most of the day, especially during lunchtime when bank employees from around the corner flock in droves. In the tradition of Japanese izakayas (casual diners marked by red paper lanterns), each customer is offered a hot, wet towel with which to cleanse hands before the meal and a tsukidash, a complimentary appetizer such as octopus salad. In addition to à la carte options, three kinds of lunch specials are offered: A special lunch combo ($9.95) brings soup or salad, a California roll, and two entrées such as chicken katsu (fried chicken in panko breadcrumbs) or salmon teriyaki. A lunch combo deluxe ($11.95) likewise brings soup or salad alongside an assortment of sushi and hot dishes such as five tempura vegetables, chicken teriyaki, and rice. A sushi bar lunch special ($10.95-$12.95) includes soup or salad and combinations of sushi and sashimi arranged artfully on a platter. Sushi ranges from single-fish traditional rolls to over-ambitious Americanized creations like a Budweiser roll ($7.50) rolled with white fish, avocado, cream cheese, and scallions and then fried and topped with eel sauce.
