Much talked about taco stand in a gas station/convenience store should be experienced by everyone at least once-preferably at 2 or 3 in the morning. No seats, so you stand by your car and eat some of the better (when the meat is just off the grill) tacos around.
We just got word that to honor a recent deal they made with Gulf, Fuel City's famous little street tacos are $1 until midnight tonight. Located at 801 South Riverfront Boulevard, Fuel City has rack... More »
A-List Dallas recently published this list, called the "BEST of CityVoter Dallas A-List," which is a confusing name for a list, but that's beside my point. The point is, after all the nitpicking we le... More »
Dude, seriously, tacos. Andrea Grimes wrote a feature on the badassness of Fuel City, and we're thinking, yeah, it's damn good. Time for a photo update of the gas station/taco town? OK! Last week, Sa... More »
Fuel City is over-hyped. Yeah, I said it. At a little over a dollar per taco, the food here is cheap, sure. But the tacos are just good. Not "MIND-BLOWING!" or "AMAAAAZING!!" like I heard they were going to be. I'm not kidding—everyone I know... More »
As a countdown to the Dallas Observer's "Best of Dallas" 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particula... More »
What with the cute poolside girls, cold Mexican sodas, beer and excellent taquería, it's easy to forget that Fuel City is also a gas station. Most of the tacos are very good, but the standout is the picadillo. Made with beef and tiny cubes of potato and seasoned to salty, greasy perfection, it's heaven on a tortilla. Make that heaven on two tortillas, actually, if you go with the corn instead of the gringo-preferred flour. Say yes to the free optional diced onions and cilantro to... More »
Not that this truck stop needs any more love. Texas Monthly already called their tacos the Best in Texas, and we once wrote a cover story about the truck stop itself, calling it the best truck stop in the world or something like that. It is a delightfully weird place with a swimming pool, a drive-through featuring bikini-clad girls who will buff your car while you buy beer, and a Tejano singer who sets up shop in the parking lot Friday nights and gets the weekend started right. But it's the... More »
You probably know by now that Fuel City serves the best tacos in Texas, according to Texas Monthly and every member of the Dallas Observer editorial staff. But we're almost as impressed with the place itself as we are with its famous taco stand. Located between a strip club and a jail, Fuel City is, like Texas, a bizarre, inexplicable and larger-than-life place. We don't know why there are cattle in a field behind the store or why young Latinas amble by the pool on a cool spring day. We're... More »
There was a time--before most of us at the Observer were born--when it wasn't enough for a gas station to sell gas. It needed a little something extra: a petting zoo, a reptile display or (a favorite from that trip to the Grand Canyon back in 1966) a full set of 20-foot-tall Flintstones characters complete with an oversized replica of Fred's log car. Decades later, the spirit of the roadside attraction is alive and well downtown at Fuel City, where they've moved in a herd of genuine Texas... More »
Not that this truck stop needs any more love. But it's the tacos that keep us coming back, and Texas Monthly had a point: They are damn good. And cheap. We recommend the picadillo and the barbacoa. Just remember: cash only. And if you have a hard time finding the taco stand, just look for the line.
Never thought I'd eat tacos from a gas station, but that was before Fuel City. For the true experience, eat your tacos in the parking lot while standing next to your car.
