The setup: Don't adjust the horizontal and don't try to fix the vertical on this TV at Black Lab Theatre. It's programmed for satire of the biting kind. Anyway, you'll be too enthralled by this cauti... More »

Tenderina from FrenetiCore: Plenty of Confusion, Not Enough Striptease

    | Wed, December 7, 2011

When I heard that Tenderina, a new production by FrenetiCore, was a play, a dance performance, a film work, a poem and a striptease, I was skeptical. This sounded like a show with an identity crisis. ... More »

    Event Review: Tenderina

    | Sun, December 11, 2011

There are some misleading points in this description of the show. Tenderina is the surreal story of a stripper who becomes a ballerina, not the other way around. And, more than that, it is about her journey to self-revelation. A multi-media collaboration based on a script by poet and playwright Loueva Smith and directed by Cliff Mabry, with original film and music by Robert Thoth and dance choreography by Rebecca French, “Tenderina” is a thought-provoking and humorous show that you can’t bring the kids to! Featuring Allison Gregory Jones as Tenderina, a.k.a. ‘The Girl Matador’; Allen Bauman as the psychedelic angel and voodoo musician, Kirk; Benito Vasquez as Tim, the accuser at a surreal trial where Tenderina is defended by the one-eyed storyteller Lee, played by Loueva Smith. Tenderina pivots into a journey of self-discovery and faces many unresolved questions as she learns what it means to be a dancer.
